Kamayan: the first, the original, the one and only
There was a time when Filipinos couldn’t find Filipino food on a respectable restaurant’s menu.
But Kamayan changed all that. After Vicvic Villavicencio opened the iconic restaurant along Pasay Road in 1977, nothing about local dining would ever be the same. When Filipino food was mostly confined to the carinderia, Kamayan insisted that it was classy and sophisticated. With its authentic and flavorful menu, Kamayan presented Filipino families with a fresh new concept: the experience of enjoying traditional local cuisine in an elegant setting, serviced by a warm professional staff.
By elevating Filipino food as something to be enjoyed in one’s best clothes, in a well-appointed restaurant, Kamayan revolutionized an entire cuisine. Artistas and socialites alike flocked to the establishment, which commemorated many of them by displaying their handprints on the walls. Soon, Kamayan was a national sensation, cementing Filipino food’s cultural and economic viability.
A true trailblazer, Kamayan was an undeniable catalyst in propelling Filipino cuisine to where it is today. While it was many things—a vibrant social club, a daring new idea, a place for families to gather, and a home for food and feasts—people agree on one thing: it is the first, original, the one and only.
This August 2019, we honor the iconic restaurant’s legacy by bringing back many of its timeless favorites and unforgettable regional specialties on the menu specially for its anniversary month.
